Some Taiwanese folks had already got their hands on the Huawei Ascend D2, Huawei’s 5 inch full HD behemoth made to challenge the rest of hardcore top-tier phablets such as HTC Droid DNA and OPPO Find 5. It was announced at CES along with the 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate. This device will be spreading across the market in China soon, but no words pricing and U.S. availability. We’re hoping there’ll be more details at MWC next month. Other specs includes its homegrown quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a sharp and fast 13-megapixel camera at the back, a hefty 3,000 mAh battery that is said to provide as much as two-days of battery life, and dual-SIM card slots that support GSM and CDMA network. In this initial look, we’ll look at the build quality, Huawei’s Android 4.1-based custom UI and some other basic stuffs.

Review & First Look : Huawei Ascend G600 The Snapdragon S4 Gangstar

Monday, 21 January 2013

Huawei being the leading company for years in manufacturing telecommunication
Yet their device are not that well known due to factor user primary considering the device as a "China" branded device. On this review we are looking on the Ascend G600 the come back attack from Huawei which launch together with it's sibling the D1 Quad and G330.Mostly aiming a budget quality product yet stylish design.

Design and Feel

Ascend G600 is available with either Black and White color choice. It has glass feel panel
on the front with 3 capacitive button at the bottom of the screen. The rear battery cover is
coated plastic which is good (non finger print magnet)
Design offer mainly derive from the Huawei Honor Series which has the square body with curve edges. The design ain't going to impress anyone or particular stylish as well but hey Ascend G600 have solid feel and not feeling cheap to hold on.

 Display

It's not big to hold on a 4.5" Ascend G600 maybe because i'm use to my 4.7" One X which sometime
the slim bezel G600 feel small to me but somehow G600 will fit any user hand well including their pocket. There's nothing much to company except the display having some glaring using under sunlight but overall brightness level is good enough for day to day usage.
Packed with qHD display on a 4.5" device is great because having higher PPI thus enhancing user viewing experience especially viewing video with vivid color and not washed out.

Camera

This is a aspect to be taken count for user that considering a day to day use phone that pack all-in-one features like myself.Camera quality is not washed out like many budget device out there with balance saturation produce on the picture. The Ascend G600 pack with 8MP BSI Camera (Rear) & 0.3MP(Front)which is a boomer.
With additional HDR,Panorama Features and BSI package it produce vivid output image.
There's bunch of setting which can be access by tapping on the arrow button and selecting the multiple option offer.Front camera are also having acceptable quality of video and image.Moving shoot seem to be ok.A sample of image (untouched) inside a moving car below :

The downside on the Ascend G600 is the issue of unable to record even HD video lefting it to be only able to be capturing video up to FWVGA (HQ) video which is minus on this device.Eventhough video quality not consider as bad but lack of HD & FullHD option isn't the best choice to be day-to-day camera phone.

Software

The Ascend G600 is powered by Huawei Emotion Ui layer on top stock AOSP android 4.0.4
Keeping the system as stock as possible but with some of tricks from Huawei.
With this method keeping the ram usage low and fluid device as the same time User Interface looks great and cool.
The User Interface can be change by accessing menu button and selecting theme setting and there's 3 choice available.Just a simple as that to switch from stock ui or Huawei customized ui.

Software developer over Huawei did a great job by featuring both of Power Saving Mode and Fast boot. Both of this features is normally found on HTC devices.Power saving mode will one of the best to have on these days as smartphone becoming more hunger on battery life. The G600 power saving mode will prompt to request to be enable as soon the battery drop below 30%.

Extra features that being the selling point of the Ascend G600 is the capability of NFC which being a new standard for phone to have it.This one super fast way to transfer files from phone to phone as well different usages of NFC by just tapping on NFC enable devices or Tag.As i mention before on the Star S1 review,i really like shortcut button that give user easy access to setting without digging that wasting precious time.

Performance

Ascend is powered by all new Snapdragon S4 (Cortex A5) 1.2ghz which seem to be a lot.
This a good to chance to let me explain to user out there about the speed of processor doesn't represent true speed of the processor. On the MSM8225 that powered the G600 offer a moderate speed but i found out that it have relative slow down during switching between page or opening an app.Graphic neither doesn't perform quite well as the Adreno 203 isn't the best choice for gaming.
Suffering on graphic glitches on Subway Surf and Dead Trigger even worst.Nevertheless the gaming experience is still playable but it might be software issue.
The Dual Core powered G600 score relatively low especially on Quadrant.
Seem to be the processor is being defeated by other dual core device including the Star S1 which we reviewed recently which scored 6610 on Antutu and 3036 on Quadrant even it's clocked at 1.0ghz.
Processor speed doesn't really matter but i guess due to low amount of ram(768mb) drag down all the performance of this little monster.

Sound

The most biggest selling feature of the Huawei Ascend G600 is the Stereo DTS powered speaker
Awesome sound output with loud volume than most device you can bring on the party.
Even being the loudest, the DTS optimization keep it clear and without shattering.
Lovely speaker.A huge thumb up on that Huawei!

Verdict

Huawei have did a great job on both hardware and software to keep the Ascend G600 fly.
Great quality of build that feel solid and packed with beautiful looking qHD screen.
For the price of RM799 this device making it the affordable as the features offer are tempting
even though it suffer from some hold back by it's performance.

What I Like :
  •  Solid Body Feel (Nice to hold)
  • Slim Bezel
  • qHD 4.5" Display
  • Front Camera are not washed out
  • Rear Camera that takes vivid photo
  • Clean and glass feel of the display and front panel
  • 1930mAh Battery
  • Gaming and Apps compability via Google Play
  • Expandable storage via microsd
  • Power Saving Mode
  • NFC Feature
  • HDR Feature
  • Fast Boot
  • DTS Stereo Speakers
  • Rear body that non fingerprint magnet
  • Removable Battery.

What I Dislike :
  • No HD/Full HD on 8MP BSI Camera
  • Outdated Operating System 4.0.4 (Currently 4.2.1 Jellybean is the latest)
  • Performance slow down on the MSM8225 Dual Core processor

Huawei announces quad-core Ascend G615 droid for Germany

Huawei introduced a new quad-core Android phone to the German market, the Huawei Ascend G615. It’s very similar to the Ascend D quad in terms of specs – 4.5” IPS LCD screen with 720p resolution (326ppi), Android 4.0 with an incoming Jelly Bean update, HiSilicon K3V2 chipset (4x Cortex-A9 at 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM and HiSilicon GPU) along with an 8MP / 1080p camera.
The G615 is cheaper than the Ascend D quad XL – it will be sold at €300, while the older model goes for around €380. The battery is not quite as big though (2,150mAh vs. 2,600mAh) and it’s slightly thicker and heavier, the Ascend G615 measures 134 x 67.5 x 10.5mm and weighs 145g.

The rest of the specs include 8GB of built-in memory, microSD card slot (take that, Nexus 4), Dolby Digital Plus audio tech, 3G with 21Mbps HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. The G615 will be available in Black and White and uses old fashioned miniSIMs.
If you’re interested, the Huawei Ascend G615 will be available in Germany starting early next month for €300. Initially you’ll be able to get it from Amazon, Conrad or Cyberport, but in March other stores will start offering it too.

Huawei Head Speaks Out on Samsung, Steve Jobs – “Samsung’s Plastic is Very Cheap”

Tuesday, 8 January 2013

Huawei-Ascend-Mate
Are you ready to hear from a very confident man? If you are then prepare for some hard-talking from Huawei’d head of Consumer Electronics, Richard Yu. The Verge got a chance to speak with someone high-up at Huawei and some of his responses were bold, very bold, indeed. For a company like Huawei to come to CES and try their very best to steal the limelight from Sony and pre-empt what HTC will be doing at MWC in February and Samsung in the Spring is interesting and it shows that there is more competition out there than we first thought. The whole interview is a great read but, below we’re going to run through some of the best parts of the sit down.
“The best smartphone is from Huawei. Not from our competitors.”
Screen-Shot-2012-03-28-at-11.53.20-AM
That might sound like a funny statement for an excutive of a company to come out with but, Huawei firmly believe that their smartphone offerings are as good as, if not the best offerings out there right now. Belief like that is something that could land them in difficulties but, a team that can dare to dream is one that could also go far. At this year’s CES the Chinese company unveiled two new smartphones, the Ascend D2 and the whopping 6.1-inch Ascend Mate. Both phones are devices that will turn heads, they might not have the same industrial design from HTC or the “natural” lines of Samsung’s best but, they don’t look cheap and they don’t look like budget offerings from the manufacturer.
There’s no denying that Huawei have been – and still are – known for delivering budget-cost handsets that leave a lot to be desired but, the company is very much looking to change that and want to be recognized as the big-dog players that they can be. Speaking about the mobile market leaders, Samsung and Apple, he had this to say:
“In the past people understood that the best products came from Apple or Samsung. We want to change this so that people understand that the best products come from Huawei. That’s my target.”
It’s certainly a high bar to aim for, with Samsung posting record profits of $8.3 Billion for Q4 of 2012 alone, it’s clear that they are not only the dominate force in the Android market but, sadly, perhaps the only one that matters to Apple. Speaking of Android, it’s Google’s platform that Huawei – and most other mobile phone manufacturers – are relying on to bring them into the high-end and they plan on doing it with a sophisticated approach to software and not just hardware. Yu says that the team at Huawei put a “European” feel into their software design.
The Ascend Mate and it’s gigantic 6.1-inch display has a lot of the media at CES scratching their heads and asking themselves “why?”. Well, Mr Yu has no trouble with the size of the phone and went on to suggest that the curved back makes the device “more comfortable than the Galaxy Note.” Richard Yu of Huawei seems to think that this new size is really quite innovative and had this to say about past visionaries such as Steve Jobs:
”Steve Jobs is gone. Now there is a lack of innovation.” and that Huawei did not need a Steve Jobs of their own, instead stating: ”We’re a team. We’re one people.”

CES 2013 : Huawei Ascend W1 now official, company's first WP8 device

Huawei looks keen on keeping CES 2013 interesting and is making another announcement in the first day of the show. The company has just unveiled ts first Windows Phone 8 smartphone called Ascend W1.
The Ascend W1 brings a reasonable array of features and should come with a pretty attractive price tag. It's build around a 4" WVGA (480 x 800) IPS LCD and has a profile 10.5 mm thick. A dual-core 1.2 GHz Krait processor and the Adreno 305 GPU power the whole thing while a 5 MP camera with 720p video recording takes care of photography needs.
The 4" screen uses full lamination technology that should help enhance outdoor visibility.

Huawei Ascend W1
The Huawei Ascend W1 will hit China and Russia this month while Western Europe, Middle East and USA should be expecting it next. The price isn't clear as of now but it should be along the lines of the HTC Windows Phone 8S or lower.
Huawei bragged about the W1 extra long battery life, claiming a 470 hour stand-by. The Ascend W1 utilizes a power saving technology that saves 30% power consumption, letting the 1950 mAh battery last longer than it normally should.
The Huawei Ascend W1 will be available in blue, red, black and white. We cannot overlook the resemblance between the Ascend W1 and recent offerings by HTC but colorful and fresh seems to be the Windows Phone 8 thing these days.
Here's the official product page.
