Apple releases iOS 6.0 beta 4 to developers, removes YouTube app

Monday, 6 August 2012

Apple has released the latest beta of iOS 6.0 to developers, and while it features a handful of new features and bug fixes, it’s also missing something: A YouTube app.
There’s been a YouTube app baked into iOS since the iPhone was first released. Of course, at the time, that app was the only way to stream videos from YouTube on an iPhone, since Apple’s smartphone didn’t support Adobe Flash.
But a lot’s changed in the last few years.
Missing YouTube
Google has added support for HTML5 to YouTube, allowing you to stream videos using the Safari web browser or any other number of web browsers, no Flash needed.
According to a statement Apple sent to The Verge, the company’s licensing agreement to include YouTube on IOS has ended.
Apple says customers can continue to use the YouTube web app in the Safari web browser — and Google is apparently working on a standalone app which will be available from the App Store.
This isn’t the first Google app to be pulled from iOS 6 though. Apple and Google compete much more directly today than they did when the iPhone first launched 5 years ago.
Apple is already developing its own mapping service for iOS 6. Up until recently the company relied on Google Maps to power the Maps app.
I doubt Apple plans to launch its own YouTube competitor anytime soon — but since you don’t really need the app to watch online videos anymore, I’m not surprised to see it go. It was kind of like a big shiny ad for Google hanging out on an Apple product.
Other changes in iOS 6 beta 4 include:
  • The data usage option breaks down usage by WiFi and cellular data.
  • You can launch Siri by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
  • The Facebook and Twitter settings are now in the Privacy settings area
The over-the-air update is rolling out now to iOS developers that have paid $99 for a developer account.

Alleged images of 7-inch iPad shell appear from the east

Sunday, 5 August 2012

Image
Hey, did you hear... Apple is making a 7-inch iPad. Well, the top brass at least thought about it, this much we know. What might it look like if it ever comes to be? Well, if you're willing to be a bit skeptical, it might look like the above. These images -- claiming to be legit iPad parts -- popped up on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo. There's little other activity on the account to back up the source, and the omission of a camera hole might irk some, but if these were early parts, then that could be something that is added later. For now, we're left to fill in the gaps with out imagination, which also includes hoping other recent teases might also make the leap into reality.

News : Apple paid $60 million to Proview to settle dispute regarding iPad trademark

Monday, 2 July 2012

The battle between Chinese company Proview and Apple regarding the ‘iPad’ trademark is not new but it has now finally come to an end, with both parties deciding to settle and with Apple having paid $60 million to Proview to use the iPad trademark.
This whole thing started two years ago when Proview sued Apple for purchasing the rights for the ‘iPad’ trademark through a subsidiary named IP Application Development Ltd. for £35,000. Proview’s claim was that had it known back then that the trademark was actually going to be used by Apple and for what purpose then it would have asked for a lot greater amount in exchange for the ‘iPad’ trademark.
The case has been going on for a while now but back in February Proview decided to sue Apple in the US, but the judge in the California court threw out the case later. Meanwhile, Proview managed to snag a victory in a Chinese court, following which the iPads were confiscated in China. Now, however, since both parties have settled, Apple can continue to sell the iPad in China.

CineXPlayer for iPad adds split-screen mode (web surf while watching videos)

Tuesday, 26 June 2012

CineXPlayer was one of the first media players for iOS to support Xvid and other file formats that the default iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch video apps can’t handle. These days media players for iOS are a dime a dozen, but CineXPlayer has added a few new features to help justify its $3.99 price tag.
The first is a new multiscreen mode that lets you use half of your iPad’s screen to watch a video and the other half to surf the web at the same time.
CineXPlayer
The split-screen view only works in portrait orientation, but I can’t really imagine why you’d want to use it in landscape mode anyway.
This is sort of like a feature Samsung is rolling out with its software for theSamsung Galaxy S III smartphone that lets you keep a small video window on top of other apps so you can keep watching while performing other activities. But the CineXPlayer solution looks a lot better since it keeps the web browser and video player in separate portions of the screen so that neither is ever on top of the other.
Another new feature in CineXPlayer 2.8 include an IMDB button that allows you to look up information about the movie you’re watching in a pop-up window.
CineXPlayer 2.8 also lets you transfer movies over WiFi, view or share movies over a WiFi network, or load movies using a web browser over WiFi. There’s also a new shuffle playback mode which could come in handy if you’re playing music videos, a video downloader for grabbing movies from the web, and a screenshot feature that lets you save pictures from a movie to your camera roll.

The Chinese electronics company Proview, who claim they still own the iPad trademark in China, recently won the first round of legal battles against Apple, after the Chinese high court found them the legal owner of the iPad brand name.

Proview, not content with having the iPad banned in China are also currently seeking 2.4 billion yuan ($380 million US) in damages from Apple.
While Apple must be fuming over the matter, Samsung are likely giving Proview a high 5.

Motorola could ban Apple's iPhone and iPad in Germany after court ruling

Monday, 12 December 2011

The iPad could be banned in Germany if Motorola chooses to act on a court injunction against Apple

Motorola could ban Apple's iPhone and iPad in Germany after court ruling

Motorola could seek to ban Apple's iPhone and iPad being sold in Germany after winning a court case over a patent dispute in the country.

A German court ruled Apple breached one of the Android smartphone maker's wireless intellectual properties.
Apple could now be forced to remove the feature from its devices and could be in for a sale ban in the mean time, if Motorola chooses to enforce the injunction from the Mannheim court by paying a 100million euro (£85million) bond.
Judges ruled that Apple failed to license one of Motorola's patents for a 'method for performing a countdown function during a mobile-originated transfer for a packet radio system'.
Motorola licenses this patent to others on Frand (fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory) terms. Apple has agreed to pay this in the future and back-date payments, but Motorola is seeking an above-Frand rate.
'We're going to appeal the court's ruling right away,' Apple responded in a defiant statement.
'Holiday shoppers in Germany should have no problem finding the iPad or iPhone they want.Scott Offer, senior vice-president and general counsel of Motorola Mobility, said in a statement: 'We will continue to take all necessary steps to protect our intellectual property, as the company's patent portfolio and licensing agreements with companies both in the US and around the world are critical to our business.''We have been negotiating with Apple and offering them reasonable licensing terms and conditions since 2007, and will continue our efforts to resolve our global patent dispute as soon as practicable.'
