Windows 8/Windows RT browser hack: Use Flash on any website

Windows 8 and Windows RT ship with the new Internet Explorer 10 web browser which has two different modes. In desktop mode, it looks like… well, a desktop web browser. But you can also use the new Windows 8-style full-screen mode to use it more like a tablet browser.

The full-screen version supports swipe-based navigation with support for gestures that let you do things like switch between tabs. But there’s limited support for Adobe Flash in this mode.

It turns out there’s a hack for that.

Technically Internet Explorer 10 can support Flash on pretty much any website. But Microsoft maintains a white list of sites that are compatible with the browser’s full-screen mode.

If you visit a site that’s not on that list, Flash doesn’t work.

But xda-developers forum member Marvin_S figured out how to access the white list and add sites to it.

You can find all the details in his xda post, but  in a nutshell you need to tell Internet Explorer not to get its list from Microsoft’s servers, then add any sites you want to access to the list on your computer and then delete your browsing history.

The trick works with both Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Since you’re turning off automatic updates, you’ll have to add any new sites manually. I suspect Microsoft’s list will get better over time. But if you can’t wait that long, it’s nice to have a way to use Flash in the full-screen, tablet-friendly version of Internet Explorer 10.

Windows 8 tablet users will also be able to install third party web browsers, but if you have a Windows RT tablet then Internet Explorer is pretty much the only game in town.

News (IFA) Samsung ATIV Tab Windows RT tablet on the way

Samsung’s Windows 8 tablets should hit the streets in late October. But they won’t be Samsung’s only tablets running a Microsoft operating system.

Samsung is also introducing a 10 inch Windows RT tablet called the ATIV Tab.

The ATIV Tab features a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor and Microsoft’s new version of Windows designed to run on devices with ARM chips.

As such, the ATIV Tab won’t be able to run older Windows apps designed for computers with x86 processors (which covers pretty much every Windows PC you’ve ever used). But the tablet will be able to handle Metro-style apps from the Windows Store, as well as desktop-style apps that have been ported to run on ARM chips.

The tablet has a 1366 x 768 pixel display, a 1.9MP front-facing camera, a 5MP rear camera, a USB port, and uHDMI port.

It supports WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC, 2GB of RAM, and the tablet will be available with 32Gb to 64GB of storage.

The Samsung ATIV Tab measures 0.35 inches thick and weighs 1.25 pounds.

Dell Windows RT tablet in October, Windows 8 tablet to follow?

Leaked documents had already suggested that Dell was getting ready to release a 10 inch tablet with an Intel Atom processor and Windows 8 operating system later this year. Now the folks at Neowin have obtained some more information suggesting that the Dell Latitude 10 will arrive sometime between November and January.
But apparently it won’t be the company’s only new tablet this year.

Dell is reportedly also working on a Windows RT tablet which could launch as early as October — right around the time Microsoft is expected to release Windows RT and Windows 8.
Windows RT is basically Windows 8 for devices with ARM-based processors. Tablets with Windows RT should get long battery life and some of the features we’ve come to expect from Android and iOS devices such as always-on, and always-connected capabilities. But they won’t be able to run software designed for earlier versions of Windows unless those apps are ported to Windows RT.
There’s not much information about Windows RT yet, but the Dell Latitude 10 features a 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, an Intel Atom Clover Trail processor, 2GB of DDR2 memory, and up to 128GB of solid state storage.
It will reportedly measures 10.8″ x 7.” x 0.4″ and weigh about 1.6 pounds and come with 30Whr or 60Whr battery options — and the batteries will be removable. There’s no word on how much the tablet will cost.
