News @Nokia Unveils Lumia 820 WP8 Device: 4.3-inch Display, 8MP Camera, Exchangeable Covers, Wireless Charging And More [VIDEO]

If you are growing tired of deciding whether or not to wait for the next-generation iPhone or grab one of the latest and greatest Android powered devices, then it might be the right time to extend your mindset and cast your net a little further afield. Microsoft has been attempting for quite some time to nurture and grow interest in their Windows Phone platform, and partnering with Nokia during the Mango stages indicated their intention to eventually make a mass assault on the smartphone market.

As part of a joint media event in New York City, executives and representatives of both Nokia and Microsoft have taken to the stage to introduce the new features of Windows Phone 8, as well as two new pieces of Nokia hardware that will be built around the aforementioned software on board. As expected, we witnessed the official unveiling of the Lumia 920, a high-end device that look seriously tantalizing and brings some impressive features to the market. In addition to that, Nokia has also introduced the mid-range Lumia 820 smartphone that is built for those who may have a smaller budget, or don’t require all of the features and power which the Lumia 920 offers.
Like its bigger brother, the Lumia 820 will come bundled with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS, and will actually be powered by the exact same processor that has been included with the Lumia 920. The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 CPU is a dual-core 1.5GHz monster that will make browsing apps and multitasking a breeze on both devices. The device will come with a standard 8GB of internal storage capacity, but is expandable through the use of a microSDcard, and will have a slightly smaller 4.3-inch display with a screen resolution of 480×800, that’s WVGA in geek speak. In place of the 920′s 8-megapixel camera, Nokia is building their mid-range device with an 8-megapixel camera without the all-so-awesome PureView tech, but does come with Carl Zeiss optics.

As you would expect in this day and age, the Lumia 820 comes with a rather gorgeous capacitive touchscreen display, and just like the Lumia 920, it is actually usable when wearing gloves, which is extremely handy for those like myself who live in colder climates. To finish off what is a very nice little device, Nokia has included the ability to change the cover on the device, great news for those who like a little bit of variety in life. Apparently, it will be possible to purchase a nice little cover that actually brings with it the ability to take advantage of wireless charging on the device. Perfect for those potential Lumia 820 owners who feel like they might be missing out on owning a Fatboy charging pillow.

[Updated]Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 Device Announced: Features 4.5-inch Display, Wireless Charging, 8.7MP PureView Camera And More

After weeks and weeks of almost blind speculation, Nokia has finally taken the wraps off its Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 device, which will no doubt serve as the company’s flagship smartphone. With Microsoft allowing vendors to really push the hardware boundaries with Windows Phone 8, the Finnish outfit certainly hasn’t disappointed with the 920.

An upgrade of the critically-acclaimed Lumia 900, it features a beautiful 4.5-inch display, and although the design looks almost identical to that of its predecessor, that’s most definitely to the advantage of the consumers, for the previous offering was easily among the most aesthetically-pleasing on the market.

Aside from the physical, it’s certainly gotten an impressive hardware bump, now packing in a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor to keep things ticking over, as well as a 2,000mAh battery. Interestingly, it will also support wireless charging with Qi standard, and is one of the first "big" smartphone releases to do so. Whether the market is ready to adopt wireless charging technology remains to be seen, but it’s a step in the right direction, and will undoubtedly push the profile of the Lumia range and Windows Phone alike.

Speaking of Windows Phone, it’ll be among the first devices to run Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system, and packs in all the juicy features the Redmond company showcased earlier this year, including Live Tiles, Internet Explorer 10, and turn-by-turn navigation through Nokia’s very own Maps service. Speaking of maps, Nokia Maps are now an integral part of the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem, so you can rest assured that you will be blessed with Nokia’s high-quality turn-by-turn navigation which we’ve come to love.
The new Nokia Lumia 920 display is being painted as the "Pure Motion HD+," and will complement snaps taken on the "PureView" 8.7 megapixel snapper at the rear of the device. Nokia’s calling its new display the "best smartphone display innovation" its has ever made, and although the resolution isn’t particularly game-changing at 1280×768, it will offer a great viewing experience thanks to fast refresh rates. Now here comes the fun part of the display, if you’re living in an area which is freezing cold and you’re bound to wear gloves then worry not, as the Lumia 920’s screen is operation even if you’re wearing gloves. Pretty neat.
Taking screenshots has finally been added to the list of features in Windows Phone 8 – an implement which was strangely missing from Windows Phone 7.x, while images taken in full high res can be uploaded straight to SkyDrive from Windows Phone 8. Microsoft has placed a lot of emphasis on Windows 8′s "Cloud OS" credentials, and third-party apps will also be able to include the seamless uploading feature.
Apart from the usual bits and pieces, the Lumia 920 comes equipped with NFC for sharing content, or more specifically, using the device as your digital wallet for making payments. More functionality is yet to be revealed in the days to come.
The Lumia 920 will arrive in yellow, red, white, gray, and black, modeled in the familiar polycarbonate uni-body.

News : Nokia Lumia 820, 920 leak out: PureView coming to Windows Phone

daThe new Nokia Lumias have leaked out and they bring great news for Windows Phone fans - Nokia is bringing its PureView imaging technology to Windows Phone 8 with a monster 4.5-inch Nokia Lumia 920, designed in Nokia’s best N9/Lumia 800 traditions and with great new colors, at least if this here leak proves true. 

Along with it comes a lesser specced and non-PureView 4.3-inch Nokia Lumia 820 with equally colorful jazzy looks and probably a more affordable price. 

Both the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820 seem to focus on the camera with Carl Zeiss lenses on both gadgets.

We don't know the actual resolution of the allegedy Lumia 920 PureView camera, but so far we've heard speculation that a PureView Windows Phone Lumia could sport a 21-megapixel sensor. This would allow the PureView oversampling technology to combine four pixels into one super pixel when you shoot at 5 megapixels, which in turn would mean less noise and better performance in low light conditions, as well as some non-degrading zoom capability (not just plain digital zoom). Still, in all likelihood this won't be exactly like the monster 41-megapixel sensor on the Nokia 808 PureView Symbian device, but somewhat less capable. On the bright side of things - you don't have to deal with a huge bulge on the back of the device, and the upcoming Lumia 920 definitely looks very, very sleek, much better than the bulky 808 PureView.

We love the colors on both the Lumia 920 and 820. That amazing yellow and vivid, almost crimson red right in the middle seem to set the new trend for Nokia Windows Phones.

As good and veritable as it sounds, this is still a leak so the final handsets Nokia unveils on September 5th might differ from what we see here. Still, to us it seems that there is all likelihood that those images are legit. If so, there will be a lot to get hyped up about in less than a week.

Update : Nokia 808 PureView gets its first firmware update

It's just been over a week since the Nokia 808 PureView went on sale and Nokia has already given the phones its first firmware upgrade.

Although an official change log is not available, but according to All About Symbian, the update brings with it improvement in scrolling performance, quicker saving of the 38 megapixel images, smoother auto-rotation and other performance enhancements and bug fixes.

The v112.020.0310 update is now available over-the-air and can be downloaded directly on to your phone, or you can download it by connecting your phone to Nokia Suite.

Nokia 808 PureView US launch confirmed by Nokia

Recently, we heard that Nokia will be launching the Nokia 808 PureView in Mexico. This was after the company publicly announced that it won't be selling Symbian and S40 phones in North America any more and also excluding the continent from the 808 PureView list of launch countries.

Now, Nokia US President Chris Weber himself confirmed to PCMag.com that the 808 will indeed be launched in North America in the next couple of months. The 808 PureView won't be available through any of the carrier but will be sold unlocked and will be compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T.

It makes us wonder what caused this sudden change of heart for Nokia. Perhaps the Windows Phone-only for North America strategy isn't working out as well as Nokia expected. But if that's the problem then an unlocked Nokia 808 doesn't sound like the best solution.

NEWS|NOKIA|Is this Nokia Lumia PureView? We hope not

What we have for you here are two leaked slides, which allegedly show a concept design and the actual specs of the upcoming Nokia Lumia PureView. It should be the Windows Phone twin of the Symbian-based 808 PureView.

According to those slides, the Lumia PureView should pack a 4.3-inch HD screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz Krait processor, Adreno 320 graphics, a 41MP camera sensor – same as on the Nokia 808 PureView with 1080p video recording and Windows Phone Apollo ticking inside.

Well, the specs sound quite right for a next generation WP flagship and Nokia would certainly be bringing the PureView technology to its Lumia range, but that design is plain ugly. We know that the huge sensor mandates a thicker profile, but that's just ridiculous.

We really hope that, if these slides are indeed real, Nokia will choose a different design for its Lumia PureView smartphone.

A PureView camera headed to the Lumia lineup soon

A few days ago the Nokia 808 PureView caused a lot of jaws to drop, only to be raised back up again to ask "wait, Symbian?" However, when you take into account that the PureView project started 5 years ago the things become clear - Windows Phone just didn’t exist back then.

Jo Harlow, Executive Vice President of smart devices at Nokia, spoke to a Finnish newspaper saying that the PureView technology is heading to a future Lumia phone. According to her, it shouldn't be too long before such a phone materializes.

Performance shouldn't be an issue - the Nokia 808 uses a single-core 1.3GHz processor with 512MB and it's a custom chip that does all the heavy lifting. That's well within reach of current WP7 phones though they'll have to adjust the processing for a Qualcomm platform.

But, of course, that doesn’t mean a Nokia Lumia PureView phone is just around the corner.
