The HTC One S has been officially announced for HTC’s home market of Taiwan. Not without a surprise, though. It turns out that while most of the specs of this device are identical to those of the internationally-sold One S (which was announced during MWC in February), there’s a different processor powering the units sold in Taiwan.
According to ePrice, the One S received a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor in Taiwan, and not the 1.5 GHz unit that’s been associated with this device ever since its announcement. But wait, there’s more. This 1.7 GHz dual-core part apparently is an older Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 model (MSM8260), and not a new, 28nm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 with Krait cores.
However, HTC has so far decided not to officially confirm this processor swap. In fact, the company’s doing its best not to mention what specific CPU is in the Taiwanese One S, nor what it’s clocked at. On the company’s Taiwanese website, under Specifications, the only thing mentioned about the processor in the One S is that it’s dual-core.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard many rumors claiming that Qualcomm is facing Snapdragon S4 shortages, and that this will affect phone makers who rely on said chips. So maybe the rumors were right after all. Otherwise, HTC’s decision wouldn’t make much sense.
Despite the fact that power efficiency was one of the main things touted about the Snapdragon S4 CPUs, HTC assures us that the One S sold in Taiwan will perform the same and have the same battery life as its international sibling. Speaking of which, the battery capacity seems to be unchanged: 1,650 mAh.
The HTC One S will be in stores throughout Taiwan in a few days.
This is still a very sturdy phone that feels strong in the hand, and it looks like a smart bit of kit.but overall its nice smartphone.
