New firmware (4.1.B.1.13) certified for 2011 Xperia handsets

Tuesday, 11 December 2012

Sony has some new firmware on the horizon for the 2011 Xperia handsets. Firmware version number 4.1.B.1.13 is likely to be a new version of Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. It has been certified for all 2011 handsets apart from the Xperia PLAY. We have no idea what improvements it will bring over the current firmware (4.1.B.0.587), but as it’s the first new firmware in months, we expect bug improvements and maybe some significant enhancements too.
Thanks jlmcr87!

I ask you please then, to remove it from your builds. I can offer you this opensource alternative found on our ics branch for Settings app:

You should spread the word around XDA PAC roms, as well, so all the builds remove it from the package.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,

But the framework still support it, so if you still want to use PA settings, then get it somewhere else & use it at your own responsibility.
Do not put a link to ParanoidPreferences, apk in this thread !!! do it somewhere else.

To be honest, this is not tablet mode at all, it has nothing to do with silly build.prop hacks. This is the first and only Android rom to feature true Hybrid mode. This rom lets you scale and project every app, every widget, even systemcomponents individually. Remember, android is modular, everything is an app: Lockscreen, navigationbar, dialogs, popups, keyboards, widgets, and your regular apps of course. Apps have the capability to switch into various designs or layouts according to the device they run on. This can result in a complete new experience as many apps will transform to the better.
Now for every element that you like chose a mode (PhoneUI, Phablet/Nexus-7UI, TabletUI) and/or a size. You are 100% independent of the system DPI which runs nicely in whatever value it has been assigned to. You do not need to boot your phone into a certain DPI. Neither will most of the changes you apply require a reboot. You will not suffer from the myriads of troubles which normally haunt you under build.prop tablet mode. Your market, phone, etc. will all work, apps won't shrink on you unless you shrink them yourself. This project will entirely transform your device, but retain the aesthetics and the feel of your phone.

Sony Mobile confirms 2011 Xperia devices will NOT get Jelly Bean

Friday, 19 October 2012

Sony Mobile has confirmed earlier speculation that the 2011 range of Sony Xperia devices will NOT be upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Sony says that it would not be able to “guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand. We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.”
What we don’t understand is that we already went through this heartache before when a Sony Mobile UK employee said that these devices wouldn’t get Android 4.1. However, Sony Mobile then came out with an official statement a few days later to say that this was an error and that they were “actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices”. It sounds like Sony had a pretty clear idea at that moment, but what that follow-up statement did was give people hope. Now Sony can expect a backlash all over again. Very odd decision making.
Thanks Stojan!

New ICS firmware (4.1.B.0.587) certified for six 2011 Xperia phones

Thursday, 9 August 2012

Good news for those of you running 2011 Sony Xperia handsets, Sony Mobile has just certified a new Android 4.0.4 firmware update for six handsets. The new firmware version number of 4.1.B.0.587 will replace the current 4.1.B.0.431 that brought Android 4.0.4 to the 2011 Xperia range.
The lucky six handsets include the Xperia active, Xperia arc, Xperia mini pro, Xperia neo, Xperia neo V and Xperia Pro. However, we’d expect this same firmware to hit all 2011 Xperia handsets bar the Xperia PLAY. Therefore, Xperia arc S, Xperia mini and Xperia ray users shouldn’t be up in arms just yet. The reason it is not showing yet is most likely down to a delay in the certification hitting the PTCRB website. We would imagine that this update will bring mainly bug fixes. We’ll bring you more information as we have it.

Sony says Android 4.1 Jelly Bean plans for 2011 handsets were an “error”

Tuesday, 31 July 2012

Last week Sony Mobile seemed to confirm on a Facebook Q&A chat that its 2011 Xperia handsets would not be upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Despite some fairly specific guidance on the matter, the Sony Mobile Product Blog is now back-tracking, saying that this information was given “in error” by “a local spokeserson”.
Sony hasn’t gone as far as confirming Jelly Bean for 2011 Sony Xperia handsets but it does say that they are “actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices”. Note the ‘all’ in that sentence. Given the clarification we would imagine that the Jelly Bean update may be planned for at least a few handsets, otherwise why would Sony build up hopes just to dash them again?
Interestingly, the post also talking about bringing further news on the ICS rollout for the Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smartphones “over the next couple of weeks”. As the Xperia P has been explicitly mentioned here, this most likely points to an ICS release for the handset in the middle of August.
Here is the statement in full:
“During a Q&A session last week on our Sony Mobile GB Facebook page, a local spokesperson gave information out in error on our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software development and rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones.
We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned.
As always, feel free to drop a question below and keep your eyes fixed on the blog, as we’ll be bringing you more on our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smartphones over the next couple of weeks.”

Official: 2011 Sony OMG!!-Xperia handsets will NOT get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Thursday, 26 July 2012

John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, has been taking questions from customers on Facebook  and, perhaps inadvertently, revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro will not receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
We have been waiting for Sony to make an official statement on their Jelly Bean upgrade plans and this is the first concrete news we have on the matter. The Xperia arc S was the highest specced 2011 Sony Xperia handset, so if this handset isn’t getting it we can conclude that none of the other Xperia handsets from the 2011 range will get the update either. However, the 2012 Xperia range do look likely to get the update, although timing remains an unknown right now.

[ROM]Xperia pro Android 4.0.4 ICS update commences

Thursday, 31 May 2012

The Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update has started rolling out for the 3.7-inch QWERTY-enabled Xperia pro (MK16i). You can find a list of SI numbers that have been updated so far here, or if you can’t wait for that you can download the FTF and flash the firmware using FlashTool here. This news means the only 2011 Sony Android handsets waiting for the ICS update are the Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia active and the Live with Walkman.

Sony delays Xperia Android 4.0 ICS update, now starting from mid-April

Friday, 30 March 2012

Sony Mobile has confirmed that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for 2011 Xperia handsets will start from mid-April 2012. The first phones to get the update will be the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray. This rollout will continue over 4-6 weeks.
Following on from these handsets, the second wave of updates for the rest of the 2011 Xperia range will start from end of May/early June. This includes updates for the following handsets: Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. The Xperia S will see an upgrade “from the later part of the second quarter”, therefore don’t expect it before June 2012.
Sony Mobile had originally stated that the ICS update for the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray would commence from end of March/early April. They also communicated that the rest of the 2011 line-up would get Android 4.0 from end April/early May. This implies around a month’s delay for some Xperia handsets.
Sony confirmed that the update will take place via PC Companion/SEUS and Bridge for Mac only. There will be no OTA updates and no notifications either. The reason behind this is that they want users to make a conscious decision when upgrading to ICS given that it is a significant revamp and that it “may impact performance in some user scenarios” given that it requires more resources.

[ROM] Sony Mobile releases Android ICS BETA Rom for 2011 Xperia range

Thursday, 23 February 2012

ICS Beta XperiaSony Mobile has today launched the Beta ROM of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the 2011 range of Xperia handsets. This follows Sony Ericsson releasing the Alpha ROM in the middle of December. The Sony Xperia developer team says that this new beta ROM has passed some certifications mainly surrounding the modem, FM radio and GSM. There are more certifications required before it can be released to the public as an official upgrade. This is stll scheduled to commence from late March onwards.

The main changes versus the previous alpha include an updated UI (mainly features from the official ICS software), quick dial, an updated email client, lockscreen (with direct camera accessibility and music player control). The GSM and FM radio have also been switched on in this beta release, which means you’ll actually be able to make calls without resorting to a mod.

The main features NOT included are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Google apps such as Gmail and Google Maps. Sony Mobile also confirmed that the final ICS upgrade software will include the face unlock app for all Xperia handsets that have a front facing camera. This is also not included in the current beta.
As before, this beta update from Sony Mobile is only released for three handsets (the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray). You need to be running at least software version number 4.0.2.A.0.42 before upgrading. You will also need to have your bootloader unlocked. Click here for all of the download links.
Users of other 2011 handsets, including Xperia arc, neo and PLAY owners, will need to wait for the whizzkids over at xda-developer to port over this latest release to your handset. However, given previous experience, we’d expect some developments in the next few days.

Download and installFollow the instructions below to download and install the alpha ROM. Please note that it only works with Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray.
  1. Make sure your phone is running the latest software release, which is build number 4.0.2.A.0.42.  If you can’t upgrade to this build number, it is not possible to try the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ phones.
  2. Go to unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com and unlock the boot loader of your phone. To do this, you must read through and agree to all the legal and warranty conditions that apply.
  3. Download the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ arc S, the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ neo V or the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ ray depending on your phone model.
  4. Extract the downloaded zip file to your Android Fastboot directory. For example: ..\android-sdk\fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta.
  5. Open a command prompt and go to your Fastboot directory: ..\android-sdk\fastboot\
  6. Flash the three beta ROM files one at a time using Fastboot. Use these three commands (replace the folder name if you are using Xperia™ neo V or Xperia™ ray):
    •  fastboot flash boot ..\Fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta\boot.img
    •  fastboot flash userdata ..\Fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta\userdata.img
    •  fastboot flash system ..\Fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta\system.img
  7. Once done, please reboot your phone.
