HTC One will reportedly be M7's name when it goes official

It appears that the M7 name which HTC's chairman Peter Chou shouted last week might only be an internal moniker. A fresh report has emerged from Twitter's highly accurate tipster @evleaks, pointing that the upcoming Taiwanese flagship will simply be named HTC One when it goes official in less than two weeks.

The idea behind the simple naming convention is to reportedly highlight the smartphone's role as a hero device from HTC. Of course, the question for the names of other HTC handsets, scheduled for release this year remains to be answered.

We will likely find answers to all our questions at HTC's event on February 19 in New York City. We will be live from the spot, so be sure to check in for the full scoop on the upcoming flagship.

Samsung rolls out Jelly Bean update for Galaxy S II I9100G

Samsung has released the latest Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S II I9100G, which is based off the TI-OMAP 4430 chipset rather than the Exynos that the standard Galaxy S II runs on.

The new update to Jelly Bean brings with it all of the recent TouchWiz enhancements, including Nature UX, Pop-up Play, expanded notifications, Project Butter enhancements, and others.

The official firmware build I9100GXXLSR is set to be available OTA in several regions now, although you may have to get it through in some Samsung Kies. Global availability should come in a few weeks, so keep an eye on your notification area.

BlackBerry All New BB10 : Q10 & Z10

The first two smartphones to ship with the BlackBerry 10 OS are a the touchscreen-only BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10 smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard.

The BlackBerry Z10 will have a 4.2 inch, 1280 x 768 pixel, 356 ppi display, a 1.5 GHZ Qualcomm Snadpragon S4 Plus dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage and a microSD card slot for extra space.
It has an 8MP rear camera, and a 2MP front-facing camera.
BlackBerry says the Z10 will retail for about $150 with a 3-year contract in Canada. Prices will vary by region, and the phone will be available January 31st in the UK, in early February in Canada and the United Arab Emirates. It should hit the US in March.
Meanwhile, the BlackBerry Q10 has a smaller 3.1 inch, 330ppi display — but it has a dual-core processor, a full physical keyboard beneath the screen, which makes it feel more like a traditional BlackBerry smartphone.

Most modern smartphone makers have left QWERTY keyboards behind — or moved to slide-out keyboards. But continuing to offer a phone with a keyboard is probably a smart move for BlackBerry, since it’s one of the features that’s helped define the company — and dropping it entirely would probably alienated long-time fans (I hear there are still some of those left).
Both phones will run the new BlackBerry 10 software, which is optimized for touch in a way that earlier BlackBerry software never was. The company is emphasizing touch-based gestures including a new “Peek” feature which lets you slide your thumb to preview incoming email messages without exiting you current app — so you can keep playing a video, for instance, while checking your inbox.
The company also put a lot of work into the new on-screen keyboard, which features strong text prediction, among other things, to offer a good typing experience even on a touch-only phone like the BlackBerry Z10. There’s also a new video editor built into BlackBerry 10 called BlackBerry Story Maker.
BlackBerry has a strong reputation for making business-friendly phones, and among other new features in BB10 is something called BlackBerry Balance — which lets users create separate profiles for work and personal use. So you can associate certain apps, data, and other information with your work profile, but maintain your personal contacts, games, and other apps on the same device.

BlackBerry 10 also now offers support for BBM Video and BBM Screen Share, which lets you make video calls using the BlackBerry Messenger service — or share your screen over an internet connection, so you hold a meeting on your phone by making a voice call and letting the person you’re talking to see the same photos, documents, or presentations as you’re looking at on your handset.

Over 70,000 BlackBerry 10 apps are available at launch

BlackBerry 10 launches today, and there are already more than 70 thousand apps available for the platform. That includes mobile apps such as Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Kindle, and Angry Birds.

The company says there are more than a thousand “top” apps already available in the new BlackBerry World… which gives the new platform a bit of a leg up on some competing mobile operating systems which often launch with few apps available.
In fact, Ubuntu Phone OS won’t even have an app store when it launches. Instead the folks at Canonical plan to focus first on the core apps that will come built-in, adding support for a third-party app store down the line.
One of the reasons BlackBerry 10 has such a large amount of apps at launch is that the company made it easy for Android app developers to port their apps to run on BB10. In fact, many Android apps can run virtually unmodified. They just need to be repackaged as Android apps.
During a recent port-a-thon, developers ported 19,000 apps in just one weekend.
That said, there will also be many native apps including media apps, games, business apps, travel, health, and finance apps.
BlackBerry World is also now a place to purchase music and videos in addition to apps — the company says there are movies and TV shows from 8 studios and all the major US music labels.
Whether any of those new apps, or the new operating system and hardware are enough to convince customers to stick with (or switch to) BlackBerry remains to be seen. There are an awful lot of excellent choices in the smartphone space at this point.

Qualcomm APQ8084 2.3 GHz quad-core chip coming in 2014

Chip maker Qualcomm just announced a new range of ARM-based processors for phones and tablets earlier this month. But the company is already working on chips that are even more powerful — and Android Police obtained the leaked documents to prove it.

The Qualcomm APQ8084 is a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor based on the same Qualcomm Krait design as the Snapdragon 600 and 800 series processors due out in mid-2013. But not only does the APQ8084 have a faster CPU speed, it’s also the first chip to ship with Adreno 420 graphics.
That will be the fastest graphics processor from Qualcomm to date, and the first to feature support for hardware-accelerated decoding of H.265 videos.
Additionally, the chipset can handle up to 2 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0 connections, 802.11ac WiFi, and cameras with up to 30MP sensors.
Android Police speculates that we’ll first see the 28nm chip in tablets, or possibly even laptops. But it could eventually find its way to future smartphones as well. We won’t see it in any devices at all until 2014 at the soonest, though.

Pantech Make the No. 6 Official; 5.9-inches of Full HD

Two things are going to be happening throughout 2013: devices are going to get ever larger and we’re going to see more and more pixels packed into our mobile displays. 1080p was super-shiny and new only a few months ago but now, it looks like it’s fast becoming old news with everyone getting in on the Full HD game. Now, it’s Pantech’s turn to show the world their 1080p offering to the world and its a little different from everything else we’ve seen so far; the Pantech Vega No.6.
You might know Pantech as a brand of smartphones on AT&T but while the smartphones on Ma Bell aren’t spectacular in South Korea, they produce some stunning devices and with the Vega No. 6 they’re pushing the boundaries of not only size but, screen resolution. Pantech’s latest phone comes in at 5.9-inches and packs in that all important resolution of 1920 x 1080 – one of the first phones to do so at this sort of size. Take a look at the full specs below:

Looking at the spec sheet alone, it looks like Pantech has enough to keep up with its competitors in the 1080p game but, as we head into 2013, keeping up isn’t going to be good enough. After all, the Galaxy S IV and HTC M7 are upcoming devices that should hopefully have some better specs aside from that brilliant screen resolution. Having said that, the Vega No. 6 does have a few things going for it, in that it has excellent support for external storage and it’s one of the first phones beyond 5-inches to pack in a resolution above 720p.

It’s clear that Pantech is looking to rely on size to sell its latest handset but, will that be enough for the South Korean manufacturer? As with a lot of phones out of Asia, we have no idea whether or not this will make it to the U.S. or anywhere else for that matter. Often, Pantech devices have ended up on AT&T but with the popularity of the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II it’d be hard for the carrier to sell two massive devices like this.

Huawei Ascend D2 Unboxing And Hands On

Some Taiwanese folks had already got their hands on the Huawei Ascend D2, Huawei’s 5 inch full HD behemoth made to challenge the rest of hardcore top-tier phablets such as HTC Droid DNA and OPPO Find 5. It was announced at CES along with the 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate. This device will be spreading across the market in China soon, but no words pricing and U.S. availability. We’re hoping there’ll be more details at MWC next month. Other specs includes its homegrown quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a sharp and fast 13-megapixel camera at the back, a hefty 3,000 mAh battery that is said to provide as much as two-days of battery life, and dual-SIM card slots that support GSM and CDMA network. In this initial look, we’ll look at the build quality, Huawei’s Android 4.1-based custom UI and some other basic stuffs.

The HTC Mini is a Phone That Comes With the HTC Butterfly in China

Your phablet is getting so unruly that you need a companion device in order to properly tame it, according to HTC. To ease your pain, to give your tired hands a rest, why not pair an NFC/Bluetooth-enabled sidekick so you can USE YOUR PHONE WITHOUT ACTUALLY USING IT. A secondary device you need to carry and charge and keep track of. It’s like buying a car that comes with a bicycle.
The HTC Mini is an additional device—one you don’t need, ever—that’s being bundled with the 5-inch Butterfly in China. You can make calls on it, see notifications, calendar entries and more. Just like on your phone. So instead of looking at the Butterfly’s big, beautiful 1080p face, users have to squint into a tiny square on a device that looks like a portable landline phone. Because why not?
Not only is the HTC Mini a phone for a phone, but it’s also a remote for the Butterfly when it’s tethered to a TV. Also, it has an embedded “Find My Butterfly” type feature, just in case you misplace your 5-inch smartphone that you probably already have firmly grasped in your hand. And it’s a shutter trigger for the Butterfly’s camera. Of course it is.
If you want the equivalent of a Matryoshka doll for smartphones, simply purchase the Butterfly in China and you’ll get two devices for the price of one. Because when you have a 5-inch device—one that I would assume you’re more than comfortable using seeing as you spent money on it—you definitely need a baby device to go with it, right?
It’s more fun to carry around two devices. Redundant doesn’t even begin to explain the HTC Mini.
