Chimei Innolux announces 5-inch 1080p LCD sporting 440ppi

Wednesday, 29 August 2012

Some people believe that taking the resolution of smartphone and phoneblet screens beyond 720p is rather useless as you won't be able to see the difference beyond that point, but LCD-makers obviously believe there's still room for improvement.
Chimei Innolux have just unveiled a 5" panel with 1080p resolution. That makes the LCD giant the second company to showcase such a product after LG demoed an identically spec'd screen this past June.
Simple math says that a 5" panel with such resolution will have a pixel density of just over 440ppi, which means that you won't be able to see individual pixels even if you have your nose pushed against the glass. The Chimei Innolux prototype will be shown to the Taiwanese public at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall starting today, but we have yet to learn more about its application in commercial products.
And that's not the only hot prototype to be demoed the event. A 330ppi 9.7-inch screen, which will allow tablets to join the Retina family, is expected to be unveiled as well. It's certain that the new prototypes won't make it into any of the products at this year's IFA, but maybe next year's smartphone top dogs will feature 1080p screens.
